Pay Days

Today was kind of a funny day at school. All day one of my students kept complaining that her feet were hurting. She told me it was because she had walked so much while trick or treating so I didn't really think anything of it. Turns out, walking had very little to do with why her feet were hurting. She finally decided to look in her shoe and this is what she foundI have no idea why/how these got into her shoes. I didn't ask. But yeah, I bet they did hurt.

My students weren't the only ones struggling today. I had to correct spelling tests. As I was getting them ready to hand back I noticed I had written this on one of them

I didn't even fix it before sending it home.

But not everything was crazy today. I had one of those "pay day" moments when all of the craziness is worth it. Usually for the ten minutes before recess I have my students read independently. When my students are unsure of a word I always tell them to "blend" it (which basically means "sound it out".) We have been working on this since August. Today one of my students (who has been struggling with reading) came to me during this time and said "Is this how I read? I just need to blend these sounds right?" And then read the whole page on her own. Awesome. That's why I do it.

  1. You should put a dime or something by those blocks so I can have an idea how big they are. You know... like they do in CSI and stuff when they take photo's of crime scenes.

I'm picturing them as a pretty large blocks and I can't figure out how they all fit in her shoes.

  2. Oh, sister...two words..."W-H-I-T-E--O-U-T". They wouldn't even notice the differerense.

  3. Wow, that kid is weird. Blocks in the shoes...apparently, I have a lot to learn about kids.

  4. Loved the story about the pattern pieces in the shoe. It reminds me about the little Jensen kid who kept complaining to his mom about his foot hurting. When Susan finally looked inside the shoe at the doctor's office, a mouse fell out! She just threw the mouse across the room, and told the little Jensen that the mouse was their little secret. Glad that you had a good day. I loved being back with my kids as well.

  5. I don't get the "Excelelent" thing...

I'm blending but am some how missing the point.

  6. Unbelievable. I think that student got tricked instead of treated.
