I think I know why you can't read good and stuff

Today I gave my students the CORE phonics survey. Basically, the CORE phonics survey lets me see where my students break down in beginning reading. I can quickly assess if they know all the letters, all the sounds, if they can blend those sounds to read little words, bigger words, if they can spell CVC words- all the beginning word reading skills. Basic stuff.

I was giving this part of the test to one of my little boys. He had to identify the letter names and then the sounds.

He was flying through it until he got the "g" on the bottom. He called it "q" (which is still fairly common in first grade - plus, who really writes that "g"?) After letter names he had to go back through and identify the letter sounds. For the "g" he said "qu" (I'll credit this kid with being consistent). After identifying the sounds I had to ask him if he knew another sound that "g" or "c" could make. I said "do you know another sound that this letter (g) can make?" After thinking about it for a second his response was "mmm...quack?" I didn't bother with "c"

I laughed for the rest of the day when I looked at this kid. Quack. That's funny.

  1. There is nothing that makes me feel better than laughing at a child.
